A low pressure associated with Storm Gerrit is expected to move northeastwards across Ireland and Northern England overnight. Potential damaging winds might develop along the southern flank of this area of low pressure, especially in the amber warning. Many parts of Ireland, Wales and Northern England are likely to experience very strong southwesterly winds, where is likely to reach 50-60 mph across inland, and possibly 70-80 mph across exposed coasts. Parts of northwest Wales might even experience higher gusts, potentially 90-100 mph across the most exposed coasts and Snowdonia. Lightning and small hail will bring additional hazards. The wind will gradually ease through Thursday morning.
